AcroWiki v2.1Overview of AcroWiki

AcroWiki is a hypertext browsing and authoring system for Palm OS. Instead of organizing your notes in plain text memos you can now use AcroWiki to create hypertext notes with links, fonts, styles. But do not be afraid of complexities of HTML syntax — Wiki syntax is created for humans.

AcroWiki is simple!
It is so simple, that you can learn it in 20 minutes. It is so transparent, that you can read memos in Wiki syntax even without AcroWiki browser, just using your memo pad! Yes, AcroWiki uses databases of standard Palm Memo application to store it’s documents: you can view and edit them both in AcroWiki browser and in MemoPad application. Plus, you can synchronize them with PC and even publish them on the web, using web-based Wiki systems like Twiki.

What is "Wiki"?
AcroWiki derives its name from Hawaiian word "Wikiwiki" which means «fast, speedy, to hurry, hasten, quick, fast, swift». The online hypertext collaboration system with same name was invented around 1995 by Ward Cunningham. The simplicity and the power of the system made it popular and it is currently used by many organizations like SAP, Disney, Motorola. There are numerous implementations in different programming languages.

What is "AcroWiki"?
AcroWiki is yet another implementation of WikiWiki, this time for Palm Pilot. There are several variations of WikiWiki syntax, the one we used is same as in popular engine called "Twiki". One of the main Wiki features is collaboration. Indeed on your Palm you are the only person editing your memos. But you can sync them to your desktop and publish online using one of the other Wiki engines for Web. Even without sharing, we found the Wiki syntax to be so easy to use that it becomes perfect way to keep personal notes.

Projects QuickView ScreenProjects is a standalone application for the Palm Operating System. It should help people to keep track of what needs to be done for a project or task. Projects itself is kept very similar to the built-in To-Do application on Palm powered PDAs. The main difference between these two apps is that Projects keeps more than one list of to-dos. Beside the to-do list each project also stores a memo text. In the current version there is only one memo for a project, future version may probably hold a list of memos for each project.

TextmasterA new version of TextMaster designed to enhance the functionality of the software on the Treo 600 and 650 (you can load the software on any other PalmOS 5.x device you are using, but you won't see any changes). On the Treo 600/650, there is no ability to use the "Command stroke", so one of the two methods of activating TextMaster was non-functional, and unfortunately, some programs, including VersaMail, would intercept the press of the right-button, making it impossible to activate TextMaster in those programs.

Version 2.4 of TextMaster now provides for activating TextMaster with the "Alt" key, which is a special key which appears on the keyboards of the Treo 600 and 650 (but NOT on the keyboard of the Tungsten C, interestingly enough). Normally, the "Alt" key is used to access accented characters - for example, you press "e" and then "Alt" and get a popup menu with accented variants of "e" to choose from. Fortunately, in essentially all cases in which TextMaster is desirable to popup a list of words of phrases (or the keyboard), you will either be at the beginning of a line, or will have just entered a space character, and the Alt key would be otherwise inactive, so it is a perfect candidate for activating TextMaster. If you are in a position where the "original" function of the Alt key should be active, it will take precedence over TextMaster, so you will still have access to those accented characters.

Galax was the first game I bought for my original Palm III. I'm going to have to download the current version and give it a go.

Based on that well know classic, Galax has tried to re-capture the feel and sprit of the original with great sounds, razor sharp controls, diving aliens and extra men at 10,000 pts.

Mini-Keyboard - Innovative onscreen keyboard for Palm OS: "Mini-Keyboard animatorsoft mini-keyboardThis looks like a bit of a twist on the standard QWERTY layout. From the product web-site:

"Up-to-date PDAs has powerful processors has dozens megabytes of memory. However, there is no handy method of entering texts on such computers. Yes, you can type several words using graffiti, but what would you do if you need to type a whole page? The keys on a system virtual keyboard are too small, and drawing thousands of squiggles with the help of graffiti is very tiresome. Furthermore, you have to constantly correct errors! You certainly wanted to write something voluminous on your Palm Handheld, but you always were confused by typesetting difficulties. Quite often, when you travel, you want to write an e-mail to your old friend, or to exchange a few words with a colleague by SMS'. But when traveling by train or by bus, using of graffiti becomes problematic. However, there is a way of typing other than graffiti. You can type faster and more accurately with the help of the truly innovative onscreen keyboard. This keyboard has large keys and QWERTY layout - is there anything more you would need for text typing? Its interface looks quite uncustomary, but you'll not need to learn how to use it. All keys are located at their usual places, though they have original form and are displaced vertically. You will quickly adapt to these distinctions, and will be able to type text almost as easily, as when using an external keyboard. You will be convinced of it!"

SplashData Updates SplashBlog to Greatly Expand the Ability for Families & Friends to Post Photos to a Shared Blog Group photo-blogging capabilities of SplashBlog to be on display at PalmSource Mobile Summit & DevCon, with attendees posting event photos to a common blog SAN JOSE, Calif., PalmSource Mobile Summit & DevCon, May 24, 2005 SplashData, Inc., the leading developer of personal productivity applications for mobile devices, announced today a significant update to its popular SplashBlog photo-blogging solution for Palm PoweredÔ smartphones. The key new features include the ability for multiple users to post photos to the same blog, and a streamlined approach to subscribing to other user’s SplashBlogs—enabling them to automatically download all new photos posted to the blogs to which they are subscribed to their own Palm Powered device. The new group blogging and updated subscription features make it easier than ever for groups of families, friends, or colleagues to always have access to the latest pictures taken by the group’s members. A family of Treo 650 users, for instance, can all take pictures with their on-device cameras, input captions for the images, and wirelessly post them to a shared photo-blog for everyone to enjoy. Those same users can also “subscribe” to their friends’ photo-blogs, and anytime they perform a wireless synchronization, all new pictures added to their subscribed blogs will be automatically downloaded into their device’s photo library. To demonstrate the power of group photo-blogging, SplashData will provide free copies of SplashBlog to all attendees of the PalmSource Mobile Summit & Developer Conference, along with access privileges to post photos to a group photo-blog developed specifically for the conference. Throughout the event, attendees will post the photos they have taken to the PalmSource photo-blog (www.splashblog.com/devcon2005) so that their friends, families and co-workers throughout the world will be able to enjoy pictures of the event and look for people they know. “Splashblog further extends the reach of Palm OS,” said Larry Berkin, director of developer marketing, PalmSource, Inc. “We believe the combination of advanced wireless capabilities and the ability to share, post and subscribe to blog entries truly make SplashBlog a must-have for users of Palm Powered smartphones.” An additional new service offered by SplashData is on the SplashBlog home page. The SplashBlog.com site is now a portal that will dynamically display recently posted photos by SplashBlog users, along with links to top-visited SplashBlogs. As users create SplashBlog accounts, they can opt-in or opt-out to have their images and photo-blogs featured on the SplashBlog.com home page. “Our goal is to establish SplashBlog as the de facto standard for mobile photo blogging by making it as quick and easy as possible for users to capture and instantly share pictures with family and friends living in places all over the world,” said John Chaffee, president of SplashData. “We’re delighted to see SplashBlog becoming a great new way for families and friends to stay in touch, as well as realtors displaying hot new properties for sale, and even businesses who are using the service to distribute product images to their sales people and customers.” System Requirements SplashBlog requires a mobile device running Palm OS 4.0 or later with a wireless data connection. A built-in camera is recommended but not required. Mobile devices without a camera can publish images from a VFS memory card (e.g., from a digital camera). Two-way synchronization is also supported, enabling images added via the Web site to be downloaded to the handheld. Pricing & Availability SplashBlog for the Palm OS® platform is available now at www.splashblog.com for a limited time introductory offer of $19.95 (normally $29.95). The software purchase includes access to an online photo hosting account on splashblog.com. A 30-day full-functioning trial is also available for download. Tags: ,

Offering Much Faster Text-Entry on a Palm Powered PDA

Instant-text-mobileBurlington, MA, May 18, 2005 – Textware Solutions announces Instant Text Mobile for Palm OS. The new program offers a very fast and accurate solution for those who use a PDA for text-entry: composing emails, taking notes or preparing documents. The program makes text-entry so much easier that it is very likely to encourage many users to do a larger share of their text-entry work directly on the PDA, rather than on a desktop computer.

Textware is a leading supplier of solutions for very fast text-entry, with Instant Text for Windows – the leading text expander solution in Medical Transcription – and the Fitaly keyboards on Palm Powered and Windows Mobile PDAs. The Windows version of Instant Text was the first program to put the power of Textware’s proprietary “Jump Ahead” technology at PC users’ fingertips, enabling them to enter only a few letters and then quickly select desired words and phrases from a list. This same capability is now made available to those who use Palm OS devices.

“With Instant Text Mobile, a thought which may take 1/10 of a second to form, three seconds to say, and six to ten seconds to type will now take just under a second to enter on a PDA,” said Jean Ichbiah, president of Textware Solutions. “The PDA has always been the most natural place to take notes and compose emails because it is always with you. Now it is also one of the quickest and most accurate means of text entry as Instant Text Mobile delivers a very fast way from thought to text."

With other input technologies, it is often difficult to keep up while taking notes on a handheld. Many users end up using cryptic notes and a variety of abbreviations created on the spot to speed up the process. The resulting documents are often difficult, if not impossible, to understand afterwards—often by their own authors.

Instant Text Mobile avoids these problems by letting users enter fully intelligible words and phrases with only a few letters, while never requiring users to memorize predefined abbreviations. A user just enters a few letters and Instant Text flashes choices of complete words and phrases. Thus, the letters trf, tfo, trfo, tfm, tft, tftion, among others, will produce the word "transformation" as a choice, and therefore, there is no need to remember any shortcut.  Any of those combinations works and a single tap enters the word on the PDA.

But words are just one "expansion" by Instant Text.  As letters are being entered, they may also produce a phrase.  In an attorney's glossary, for example, "natc" typed right in the middle of a sentence might yield a word like "naturalistic" but also the phrase "notwithstanding anything to the contrary," a phrase identified from the first letters of different words.  The use of phrases results in major keystroke savings. For that reason, the glossaries supplied with Instant Text Mobile contain thousands of phrases that are frequently used in everyday letters, memos, and emails: phrases such as “I would like to receive,” “you are going to,” “on the other hand,” “whether or not,” and “for your review.” Instant Text Mobile also includes a very easy-to-use interface, making it simple to add new phrases to a glossary within seconds.

"Instant Text Mobile offers word completion with a twist,” said Tanker Bob, a writer and product reviewer for MobileTechReview.com . “The software can be as simple or as deep as you like.  It can simply complete words as you start them, or you can use your own ‘shorthand’ to leverage its smart text-pattern-matching engine and dramatically cut your actual writing time and effort."

Instant Text Mobile is available at the Textware Solutions web site, www.textware.com , for US$29. An introductory price of $25 applies until the end of September.
